"I can't believe ten years has passed since we led the first group out to Kenya to help build a hospital. We had no idea at the time how fast KOP would grow and how ten years later we would be heavily involved in school based nutrition and health projects throughout the Nyanza province. It's been such an amazing experience to be involved in, and I hope it continues to expand and grow over the next ten years." Dr Beccy Leslie, co-founder and chair of board of trustees of KOP.
It's true! A whole 10 years has passed since Owain, Dan and Beccy took that first student group out to Kisumu to convert an old hotel into Port Florence Hospital. In the past decade, the Kenyan Orphan Project has grown and developed into the charity we now know as KOP and it has supported so many children throughout Kisumu along the way.
We launched our yearlong anniversary celebration at the start of October 2011 and have a whole host of events and activities planned for the following 12 months.
First up was our national student conference held where it all began; in Nottingham University. The event saw students from 17 universities learn more about the context for our work and gain a better understanding of how and why we use the funds they so passionately raise for us.
Weheld an exciting night of dinner, dancing and celebrations at London's Savoy hotel. This fundraising gala was open to all who support KOP and the work that we do, those who have been involved with our work over the past decade and to people who just fancy a great night out in honour of a worthy cause.
More events, celebrations, fundraisers and anniversary activities will be announced in the coming months, though look out for the special '10 peaks challenge' – a sponsored climb over 10 of Wales' mountains in a single Autumn weekend and a birthday party with some of the children KOP supports out in Kenya.
"KOP is delighted to have supported some of the world's most vulnerable children for a decade - it is a challenge that we could not meet without support and we look forward to working hard to support child health and education for another ten years." Dr Dan Magnus, co-founder and trustee of KOP.
If you are interested in finding out more about any of these activities or if you would like to raise funds in honour of our 10th birthday then please do donate now or get in touch. We'd love to hear from you.
