National Student Conference
Date Posted: 12 November 2011KOP's Student Programme exists to inspire the next generation to become advocates for change. As a result we want to do more to educate KOP students on the issues they will face in Kenya and give them a broader understanding of the context for our work. Our student conferences aim to do this and 2011's event was no exception.
The programme included talks on HIV/Aids both on the global scale from Nottngham Associate Professor John McLuskey but also with specific detail given about the situation and reality in Kenya from Eunice Ndirangu, a PhD student from Nakuru in Kenya.
With presentations from trustees Dan and Owain, KOP students got to hear all about how KOP started straight from the people who were there at the beginning and were given the chance to learn more about how and why KOP works in Kisumu.
Lucy Atkinson from Challenges Worldwide challenged the students to think about the ethics of International Aid and Volunteering and this led to a great deal of interesting discussion over the breaks.
With the participants made up of existing and new KOP students it was the perfect opportunity to learn from each other and a session on fundraising and formalised focus groups meant the KOP team came away with lots of ideas and valuable feedback for how the student programme works both in the UK and overseas.
